Introduction to Fruit Tree Grafting

A fully comprehensive overview of the art of grafting with scions, covering all the aspects of what you need to know to graft and maintain your trees in early life.

We will ensure that you learn the best method we know regarding scion grafting, guaranteeing successful grafting, and simplifying this art to the basic understanding of what you need to know. You will get direct one to one tuition to ensure you graft safely and effectively.

We will have a choice of over 100 varieties of apples to choose to graft from, as well as a selection of pears, plums and cherries. You will be able to buy rootstocks at the workshop to take home with you to graft on to, as well as a huge selection of known varieties of scion wood to graft from.

We will provide all the necessary tools for grafting; knives, tape, wax, labels, pots, compost and handouts on all you need to know about how to graft to take home.

You will be guided directly on:

  • The easiest most effective method of grafting for general use for most trees.
  • All about the different rootstocks available for scion grafting
  • How to choose scion wood
  • When to cut your scion wood
  • The timing of when to graft
  • After-care for your trees post grafting


Please bring a packed lunch, walking boots and water proofs for the outdoor sessions. Please aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time of the course.

This course is being delivered as part of Avon Wildlife Trust’s Food and Sustainability Programme for 2017.

The course will be delivered at our Feed Bristol project which is a 6 acre community food growing hub and native wildflower nursery. This is an education and community enterprise centre which champions conservation and ecology in a food growing setting.

Fees for this one day course are as follows:

Participants claiming benefits – £30 per person

Participants on low income (less than £15,000) – £40 per person

Participants earning above living wage (more than £15,000) – £50 per person
